Pine and Crane Bowl, Second Grade

Pine and crane, which are considered to be good luck in Japan, are painted with blue on clean white surface. The outer edge of the cup is little thickened.

This particular bowl is second grade, just because blue color of the pine and crane turned out to be lighter than it supposed to be. Compare with the first grade bowl. However, for people who prefer lighter tone, this is a bargain.

This bowl is made at Seto Hongyo Gama, a potters’ workshop which has been continuously producing high quality handmade pottery since around 1800. Read more about how pottery is made at Set Hongyo Gama from here.

Other than serving soup, yogurt, and cereal, this bowl would also look great to serve olives, pickles, or condiments.

The Japanese say that good earthenware “grows.” This means that by use and over time, brand new earthenware changes color gradually. As you use this rice bowl, it will “grow” and gives you a pleasure of owning an authentic Japanese pottery.
