Sweet Miso Flavor Kashiwamochi Recipe

I have to confess that this is not exactly kashiwamochi, because this is not wrapped with kashiwa leaf. Kashiwa belongs to oak family. Its English name is Japanese Emperor Oak or Kashiwa Oak.

The distinctive difference of kashiwa from the other oaks is that kasiwa leaves don’t fall off until the new leaves come out in spring. For that reason, kashiwa is considered as a symbol of heir.

Families with small boys celebrate the boys’ day (May 5) with kashiwamochi, which is a confectionery wrapped with kashiwa leaves, hoping that the blood line will keep going on forever without fail. The tradition is standing on sexism culture, but the confectionary itself can be enjoyed by everyone.

There are some notes for the ingredients. When you buy a can of beans, look at the ingredients list carefully, and buy one without salt or flavoring. Alternatively, you can buy dried butter beans, soak in water overnight, and boil until they get soft. Also rice flour and sweet rice flour are different.

This was my favorite mochi when I was a little girl. The fragrance just made it extra special. Now I know why I don’t usually find it anymore. You say you can use bamboo leaves in its place. Are you able to eat bamboo leaves or is it just decorative? Thank you for always explaining things so well.

No, you can’t eat bamboo leaves. You can’t eat kashiwa leaves either. They are just for fragrance, as you mentioned, and to prevent mochi sticking all over.

Thanks for your reply. I don’t remember what I did with the kashiwai leaves since I was so very little … Hope my mom stopped me from eating them!

I’m sure you didn’t eat them, because they are really tough to chew and swallow. Even if you ate by mistake, they are not toxic.
